During my first week of practicum I was
given the opportunity to attend the field trip to the Two Rivers Gallery. My Co-Operating Teacher makes it a point to
utilizing all of the amenities in the downtown area. She makes good use of the loyalty program, where
if your class visits the art gallery on two separate occasions the third visit
is gifted to class free of charge. On
this visit we were blessed with the beautiful painted landscapes from David
Alexander. The exhibit is titled “The Shape of Place.” The
pieces in this exhibit bring together works from all phases of the career,
depicting such varied locales as the Canadian Arctic, Iceland, the Canadian
prairies, and the Rocky Mountains. It has been noted that Alexander's paintings
are characterized by their intensity of vision, strong, vibrant colour, and
convincing sense of the particularities of place. The presenter indicated that
this artist works to personally extend the meaning and role of landscape
painting as a contemporary activity, field of thought and endeavour.
After the gallery
walk, our class was guided up the stairs to the studio where the student had
the opportunity to create their landscape picture with chalk pastels. This experience was such a great experience
to witness and part take. I was in a Kindergarten/Grade
1 class so this was such a great opportunity to see the type of activities that
the gallery offered for this age group.
After the landscape drawings the students had some free time in the art
gallery’s day care play center.
That day was a
beautiful day, so the walk to the Two Rivers Gallery was a good break.
