There something that
maybe none of knows about me, but I love to dance. So during my practicum I utilized this love of
dance to, let say, “get the sillies out” of my Kindergarten and Grade One
students. After some searching on the
Internet I found many teachers who have been using dance in their classroom to
improve learning and not only in PE.
The called it our dance par time. I chose dance moves that would cross the
imaginary line drawn down the center of your body from head to feet. This activated the both sides of the brain so
they would develop gross motor skills and give their brain a good work out
also. So picture very adorable four, five and six year olds doing the cabbage
patch, raising the roof, and the cowboy.
A few other moves that allowed the student to move from side to side
were the shopping cart, the sprinkler and the side step with a little wiggle as
you step. This was very cute!!
Shortly after I was
receiving some really good feedback from parents and my CT that the students
loves the dances moves. Disco eyes was
one of the favorites. This lesson was right before their Halloween dance too,
to the student were excited to be able to shoe off their moves.
After the initial lesson I was able to use this as an AFL strategy, but instead of a thumbs up thumbs down the student would raise the roof to communicate that they understood what was expected.
Dance on everyone!!
